IQL (Independent Quality Labs, Inc.) The Company IQL is located in the historic Rockville Mill of rural Rhode Island. It was incorporated in 1985 to provide the manufacturing community with the latest technology for measurement of machine tool accuracy. This technology is delivered to our customers with honesty, integrity and dependability. With these simple goals in mind, we have evolved into one of the worlds first corporations to deliver fully integrated machine tool accuracy measurement systems and services. Directions The IQL fully integrated calibration systems are not limited to hardware or software. We begin by identifying our customers needs and their readiness to satisfy those needs. We start our analyses where the manufacturing process begins, with the part drawings. Our years of design experience enable us to review the drawings and quickly spotlight critical tolerances. If the part is already in production, we may also review the measurement process, using our experience with the design, development and application of CMMs. These initial manufacturing reviews permit us to select the measurement methods which most appropriately meet our customers' needs. The measurement methods are then joined with the most appropriate instrument(s). Consideration is given to resolution, range and instrument accuracy, as well as to thermal influences. Instruments are selected from a wide range of devices from a variety of manufacturers, such as Renishaw, Mahr Federal and Lion Precision. Where instruments, artifacts and fixturing are not commercially available, IQL's engineers develop their own products to fill these needs. The instruments are integrated using Locus software, developed by IQL. This proprietary software allows the development of structured and reproducible methods of organizing the locations, machines, tests, and instruments. Locus provides a retrievable archive of machine test data. The result of the fully integrated system is documentation of the measurement process. This is compiled into a report using text, digital photographs and spreadsheets embedded in the Locus software. For customers who purchase our services, more detailed reports include setup procedures, comments and recommendations as part of the package.
IQL offers several training courses for customers who wish to develop their own in-house
capabilities. Each training course is tailored to our customers needs and skill levels
and includes detailed training manuals to the participants. The People Robert (Buz) Callaghan is the Chief Engineer at Independent Quality Labs, Inc. He has over 39 years experience in precision tool and machine design and metrology. Buz has published numerous papers on the accuracy of CMMs and CNC machine tools. He is a member of the ANSI/ASME committees B89.1.12 "methods for Performance Evaluation of Coordinate Measuring Machines" and B5.54 "methods for Performance Evaluation of CNC Machining Centers." Buz holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Lafayette College and a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Michael Mariani is the Marketing and Sales Director at IQL. He is responsible for product and business strategy for the group, with over 20 years of experience in product and channel development for global metrology and manufacturing firms. Michael has special expertise in business strategy, focusing organizations to understand key market drivers and convert that insight into successful product and market initiatives. He earned both his M.B.A. and bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Rhode Island. Steven Lord is a Senior Computer Engineer, in Software Development at IQL. He holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from University of Massachusetts and a M.S. from Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Paul Caswell is a Senior Software Developer at IQL. He holds a B.A. in Mathematics and Computer Science from University of Rhode Island. Kerry Callaghan, is the Contract Manager and Technical Editor at IQL. She maintains government contract requirements, designed and maintains the website, creates training presentations, and develops software Help programs. Kerry has a B.F.A. from Rhode Island School of Design. Justin Lebel, IQL’s Testing Technician, holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology from New England Institute of Technology, focuses on new product design and development. He also has several years experience running both manual and CNC controlled machine tools. Charlotte Gardiner, is IQL’s Office Manager, handling everything from bookkeeping to travel arrangements.
